Modern neurosurgery is one of the highest accomplishments of civilization. It is in part a craft, for its skills can be taught, and long practice trains the surgeon’s eyes and hands. It is partly a science, for it is the subject of constant research, growth, experimentation, and study, and every surgical procedure adds to human knowledge.
But neurosurgery is also art, as subtle as the greatest painting. It demands that the surgeon have vision, to forecast the outcome of his actions. It requires leadership skills to direct a surgical team as a conductor directs a symphony orchestra. It demands discernment and elevated sensitivity. There are times when the surgeon must be creative to deal with a novel surgical challenge, and must use the exquisite control of his hands and instruments to repair and heal.
Most of all, it needs courage to shape the future of an unconscious patient. Only the combination of coolness and passion, delicacy and strength, can create new health out of what was injury or illness.
It is art. |
